Everything went according to schedule with the deck, and the main portion of the deck and stairs have been stained. D got up slightly after 6am (his alarm usually goes off at 7:30am). After some final prep work, breakfast, and putting on loud music, he finally got started around 7:20am and was finished by 10:15am. Musical selections were:
- Us3: Hand on the Torch
- Underworld: Beaucoup Fish
- Black Eyed Peas: Behind the Front
- Eurythmics: Greatest Hits
- Voodoo & Serano: Cold Blood
The work was done before the Eurythmics came on.

Phase 2 of deck preparation, including cleanup, was completed by 10pm (earlier than expected). I decided to test the low-light capabilities of my Fuji F30, and I must say I'm impressed with the results. The graininess of ISO 3200 is minimized with small web-based viewing. Much more exciting than watching a deck dry.
D seems to be taking a page from the Book of Raf (Renovations 16:1 "And you shall maintain your deck so you may enjoy it for years to come."). Fortunately, this deck project is not as involved as Raf's, but still seems like an ambitious schedule:
- Wednesday Morning: Power wash deck (already behind schedule, since only about 75% was completed)
- Wednesday Evening/Night: Leave work early, purchase supplies, finish washing deck, scrub deck with cleaner (probably working well into dark thanks to flood lights).
- Thursday: Drying time during the day, use blower after work to clear off minor dust/debris (since it's too loud to use early Friday morning)
- Friday morning: Take time off from work to apply finish, starting early to complete the application before the deck is exposed to full sun.
- Friday Afternoon through Saturday: Drying time before potential rain on Saturday night (30% chance) and Sunday (50%).
You're supposed to do this every year, but it's probably been 16 months (or maybe 23).
